Keeping our house clean is something that we are always conscious of and always making an effort towards. This includes every part of the building from the interior to the exterior. However, one thing you may not think about when it comes to keeping your house clean, is your roof. Of course, this doesn’t come with as much easy access as the rest of the building, nor as much maintenance, but ensuring that it is clean is something that you should try to stay mindful of and contribute towards. A clean roof will often improve the lifespan and reduce the risk of common types of damage.

So, we wanted to tell you why it is important to keep your roof clean, and advise you on a few ways you can do this.

Why you should keep your roof clean…

First and foremost, the worst thing about having a dirty roof, is that it is a huge eyesore on your home. It becomes visibly noticeable very quickly, especially when algae starts to grow as the colour of it contrasts with the rest of your roof and therefore creates an unwanted focal point. The main reason we encourage you to keep your roof clean is for this very reason, that it prevents your house from looking unattractive from the exterior. Not only this, but leaving moss or algae to fester on your roof can actually have an impact and cause damage. Furthermore, cleaning your roof and keeping a close eye on things will often enable you to notice any developing problems or anything unusual, sooner. As a result, you will be able to seek the right help and treatment in order to prevent this from developing into a bigger problem that might be potentially harmful and dangerous to both your roof and your house.

Ways to keep your roof clean…

As we mentioned, your roof isn’t the most easily accessible spot in your home, which is why roofs tend to be neglected and forgotten about when it comes to cleaning. Cleaning your roof isn’t required on a very frequent basis, and certainly considerably less than standard weekly chores within your home. However, building up your own cleaning routine with your roof is a good way to keep things consistent and ensure that it doesn’t become dirty or start to grow algae and moss. Keeping a clear roof is a great way to prevent this from growing. This may include getting rid of a build up of any kind of dirt and debris on your roof, as this sort of conditioning will result in the growth of moss and algae.

When cleaning your roof, we advise that you try to do this in good, clear weather, particularly if you are using any kind of cleaning products. This will allow the product to settle and not be washed off by the rain. Furthermore, ensuring that your roof is exposed to sunlight is important in keeping a clean and well-conditioned roof. If you are purchasing a cleaning product to use on your roof, make sure to read up about the product beforehand to ensure that it is safe and the right product to be using and will not cause any harm to the roof and surrounding things such as plants.

Cleaning algae off your roof is much easier when it is all dried up, which is another reason why it is important to keep the area exposed to sunlight. When the algae is dried, you can get rid of it by scrubbing or brushing. You will find that in doing this, the algae will flake off, however be sure that this doesn’t impact the surrounding guttering. If you allow the algae and debris to fall into the guttering, this can cause a buildup and blockage which will result in draining issues.
